InDesign Journal #5 – Magazine Spread

In this assignment, we made edits to a magazine spread. In order to polish the magazine we had to add, a drop cap, paragraph styles, page break, add a photo, replace words, and add a glyph. We learned how to use the Find/Change tool to replace a word in the magazine. It was exciting to use this tool because several non-adobe applications provide this tool to edit your document. This tool saves you from having to edit every misspelled word by hand.

One of the things I found challenging was creating a footnote on the first page and then having it on the front of the second page. I tried to do the automatic numbering, which we learned in previous weeks. I had to go back in the book and directions to do this correctly.

I was very proud of my work into this assignment. However, before I put it on my blog I had to make several changes. At first, I was very frustrated because I thought that I did everything right. After a while, I was laughing at myself because this assignment was to help us edit and polish this document. Instead, I found several mistakes and ended up making more edits to the document. For example, I found the Find/Change tool is very helpful but when I changed a word (the assignment told us to) and it changed the word but did not add a space after it. I laughed when I went back because I had to change each word and add a space (which was the process I was trying to avoid by using the Find/Change tool). I still did not find out what I did wrong and why the tool did not work. In the future, I will learn to double check my document. I also learned that I did not set the tabs the right way. The outcome looked correct but I did not apply the tabs correctly.

In the future, I need to continue to practice these editing techniques because I did not execute them properly. The more I am able to practice these techniques the better I will be able to master them.
